vSphere 6.0 Released —

vSphere 6.0 was just released.  If you’re like me you’re excited, so to make life easier I’ve collected some important links.  Here you go.


An update a long time in coming —

Holy crap.  New year meant a new job, and boy have I been busy.  I can’t believe I’ve been here for 2 months already.  Time is flying, and while it’s been fun, it’s been very, very, very busy.

I love the new job, the work is very challenging, but it hasn’t left time for much else.  Those of you that have talked to me about soccer will know that I’m not coaching this season.  I’ve also left my volunteer position as the Vice President of SYA Soccer.  I realized before the season started that I just don’t have time to dedicate to those two activities.  No matter how much I wanted to, it just wasn’t going to happen, and I didn’t want to do a disservice to the kids or such a great organization.

I’ve also cut way back on the games I’ve played, even going so far as to cancel my wow subscription.  Not a huge deal since I was having a hard time convincing myself that I was having fun, but still a step that I’ve had to take.

What have I been working on you might ask.  Setting up an entire infrastructure in AWS to absorb any number of applications that we’re currently running in our hosted space.  It doesn’t help that the company responsible for our provisioning, hosting, and support of our environment is horrible.  That’s just one of the many challenges I face.  In addition to the hosting company being horrible, we have a number of projects that need to be finished.  On the plus side we just finalized a move of an entire datacenter up to AWS, and for the most part it went smoothly.

I’ve written a handful of powershell and bash scripts that will rename an AWS machine based on it’s Name Tag, join the domain, and make a couple of core settings that I’m looking for.  I hope to roll those scripts into a cloudinit script that’s part of a CloudFormation JSON file, but since we’re in the middle of ‘hurry up and deploy’ I haven’t had the time to really look into that. 

In addition to the AWS stuff I’m working on, I’m also trying to re-design the XenDesktop environment that we use.  Thankfully I have a group of vendors and contractors that are doing most of the heavy lifting on that project.  I definitely feel like I’m not giving it enough attention though.  Hopefully that will change in the next week or so as I finish getting one of our main products development space finished off in AWS.

I have way more technical stuff to post but for now that’s probably going to have to wait, because I want to finish off this RDP Desktop Services environment I’m building for QA and then relax for the night.

New Year, New Job, New Challenges… —

Well 2015 started, and to kick it off with a bang, I started a new job.  I was asked like 15 years ago what I wanted to do going forward with my life.  I said I wanted to be a system architect, and low and behold here I am.  I’ve spent the last two weeks as a Sr. Systems Architect, and the work is exactly what I had hoped it would be.  I get to set the direction, document where we want to go, and influence what we do going forward.

Of course with a new job comes it’s own set of challenges.  I worked a little more than I would have preferred, but since it was challenging and interesting, it wasn’t a huge deal.  Unfortunately with more work, that meant less play.  At a time where the guild really needs more recruits, I wasn’t around as much as I had hoped.  Now that I’m past the first deadline though, I hope to be able to get more recruiting down, and continue to help us push through into Mythic raiding.

I also hope to be able to post much more now that I’m doing less operational work, and more planning, architecting, and direction setting.

Hectic —

With the end of the soccer season, I thought I would have more time to do things like write posts.  That however doesn’t seem to have been the case.  Between getting my raid character ready for both raids and PvP, rebuilding all of the kids computers, and work – I haven’t really had any time to sit down and write.

On the plus side, I’ve been getting more cooking done, so there is that.  I made my first cheesecake last night, and it turned out well.  I tried to make bignets and that did not turn out well.  I do however think I know where I went wrong with the bignets so I may be trying it again next weekend.  I’ll also be looking at doing something other than a plain cheesecake next time.  I’m leaning towards peanut butter, but Chris wants me to go chocolate, so we’ll see. 

Short post, but hopefully I’ll get more time this week to write a longer one.

Split Focus… —

This post is going to ramble a bit, so I apologize in advance.  Sometimes it helps to just write things down as you think through them, and this is going to be one of those posts.  If you’re not interested in the ramblings of a slightly crazy person, don’t click the link below.

Where has the time gone —

I feel like every couple of months I write the same post.  I’m going to do better blogging, blah, blah, blah.  I read a great article this weekend about how to be a more consistent writer, and it had some good points.  I’m going to try to stick to them, starting with setting a realistic goal for myself.  I’d like to have a ‘good’ blog post up at least once every two weeks.  This should give me time to put together a post and not always feel like I’m behind and won’t be getting it done.  We’ll see how it goes, but I’m optimistic.

It’s going to be a busy week again this week.  I still have family in town, I have to run practice for two all star teams during the week, work, grow technically, lead the WoW guild and get us ready to be competitive in WoD, on top of that it’s Playoff season for MLS, and Blizzcon is this weekend.  Finally I have to get my shit together to get the soccer website in much better shape.

Markdown, Harp, and Me —

I’ve been trying to convince Nick to help me build the rlgeex wiki for about a year now.  Nick has been trying to convince me that Markdown is a better way of doing documentation for the last week or so.  Then he said something that made me re-think my position.  ‘If we do markdown we can host all the documentation’.  Sold!

Now to figure out how to present markdown documents as web pages.  To the Google!  There are a number of ‘web servers’ out there that will take markdown documents and convert them into static HTML pages.  I settled on Harp, using node.js it seems pretty straight forward and fits all of my needs.  It also has a plugin that will build out a sitemap for you, very important on a wiki site. 

for the Next few weeks I’ll be working on getting that setup completely, as well as converting the existing documents on the wiki site into markdown.  All documents will be checked into a local GIT repo and then pulled down from the repo to the Harp server regularly.  Sounds like a good plan to me, now all that’s left is to finish implementing it.

Overwhelmed —

Sometimes you get into a situation where there is just entirely too much going on.  When that happens I have a hard time focusing and getting things done that I want to get done.  That has been my life over the past few months.  I’m trying something new, scheduling my time in 30 minute increments for everything and see if I can’t get more writing done.

This should also allow me to focus more on my project as well, and get past this scatterbrained feeling that I’ve been having non-stop for the last few months.

Here’s hoping.


Changes, they are coming… —

I apologize for the lack of posts lately. I have been working with Nick and Karl to re-build the internet facing part of my home environment.  I’ve finally gotten rid of the Actiontec router that Verizon had delivered to me for FIOS, and converted over to a Intel ARM based system running Linux.

Doing that involved running a new Ethernet cable from the OTP through the house into my server room, then came the challenge of getting Verizon to change my internet access from MOCA to Ethernet. This sounds much easier to explain than it actually is.  My first call to Verizon, the rep had no issue understanding what I wanted.  As she told me that the process should be finished in 10 minutes, we were disconnected.  I figured I would be alright since she said the process was complete.  30 minutes later my internet had not moved from MOCA to Ethernet.  *sigh* Time to call Verizon back.  My second call, not so easy.  The tech I was talking to was convinced that moving it to Ethernet would not work.  After being put on hold multiple times, and the tech talking to network engineering, he finally came back and said it was complete.  Success.

My internet was not a lot faster than it used to be, but the problem was my gateway was running on Ubuntu.  *bleh*  Working with Nick I was able to just recently get it moved over to Fedora 20, where it will stay until we move to CentOS 7.

With that change my network is much more resilient.  In addition I’m now testing a Unifi AP and I am very pleased with the results.  I’ll be ordering some additional network equipment in the next few days, to finish building out my lab.  When all is said and done, I’ll have a new domain running, IPv6 and IPv4 internally and externally accessible, a Cisco gig switch with multiple VLANs and all of my hypervisors talking to each other in a much more reliable fashion.

Next up, building the domain controllers, bind servers, and getting it to all talk to each other.
